Human microbiome

  • Provides various metabolic functions that humans lack

  • Breakdown of sugars

  • Production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)

  • Production of vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12, K, H) and essential amino acids

  • Production of usable calories (up to 10%)

Microbes include bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses

  • The human intestinal flora varies between individuals

  • Populations within different countries are similar but different between countries

An imbalance in the microbiome has an impact on a wide range of diseases, this has been scientifically proven, including obesity, chronic inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
